A former chapel in the sky

What was once the chapel of a 20th century convent has been transformed into a graceful, art filled penthouse duplex. With its traditional sequence of rooms, this penthouse mixes the classic with the unexpected. The end result is a delicately balanced space where art, heritage, and modernity intermingle.

After spending over 20 years in their Westmount home, where they raised their family, our clients were looking for a new residence that would be better suited to their changing lifestyle. After searching high and low, we realized that the house for them didn't quite exist yet: we would instead put a new spin on an existing building, a tall chapel that was no longer occupied.

Our brief was to create a generous formal living space where they could entertain guests, but also easily be able to gather with their close family and their grandchildren (19 in total!).

The reception area boasts a 20-foot-tall ceiling, and encompasses a dining room, a formal living room and a lounge area. Like the rest of the spaces, it combines chic traditional elegance with subtle architectural elements. The challenge was balancing a timeless and effortless-looking design with the mix of contemporary and classic pieces that are found throughout the home. All in all, the result is a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects our clients' personalities and lifestyle. The apartment is the perfect backdrop for the extensive art collection they've built over a lifetime, and a warm embrace for their ever growing family.

“Making sure that the discreet and well-detailed elements were right was key. A design is harder to make perfect when it’s simple.”
