A dark stone house no more

Les Ensembliers tackled the reinterpretation and reinvention of this 9,000-square-foot stone Tudor Mansion. The once dark and somber house is perched at the summit of one of Montreal's hilltop neighborhoods, amid breathtaking views. This classic beauty was carefully re-designed and transformed into a bright and happy home for a young family.

The brief was to highlight the beauty and character of the old home while making sure to bring in more light to each and every room and add a warm and contemporary touch.

First things first, spaces were opened up to create bigger rooms and to optimize the flow throughout the residence that leads out into the gardens. Once the rooms were redefined, new crown moldings and extensive woodwork was reintroduced to mimic the original and tie the whole concept together. Dark woods were lacquered throughout, and wallpaper was introduced wallpaper alongside the existing paneled woodwork in the main entrance hall and staircase, creating a spectacular, yet soft, impact within the space. What were once the dark floors of the entryway were ripped out and replaced by a modern pattern of light stone and brass inlay.

A bespoke approach for each room and its furnishings was envisioned to respect the clients wish of a contemporary and minimalist lifestyle. Every room has a unique essence, but still seamlessly flows through to the next.

Today, the home is filled with the joy of family and friends… and lots of light!
